Hi
my name is Samey Abdulrub and I’m a freshman at Wayne State University. I’m 18
years old and I love to play sports. I’m not completely sure on what I want to
be in the future, all I know is I will be living anywhere but Michigan. Writing
to me was always a bad thing. I hated writing ever since I started to write
research papers and persuasive essays with certain strategies. High school
writing wasn't really a challenge to me. I would always do the paper the day
before it's due. I'm the type that works better near the deadline of an
assignment. All my writings were never really meaningful or actually put in
some thought. I'd just do the requirements for the paper to get a decent grade.
It would usually take me hours just to start a paper, but usually after I start
it I finish quickly after. Most papers that I have written were reviews or
summaries. Usually the only writing I did was about some random topic and should
or should not question. Other writing was just summarizing events from a book I
read in class.
You can say I don’t have a lot of experience with writing, well at least not any experience with challenging writing. In high school I never was into any of the topics that were assigned for the writing and for the ones that were free writing I would just go online and find a topic with the most information so I could finish faster and it would be easier to write. I didn’t really put much effort into my writing or any emotion, I just wrote to get a grade. Also the teacher didn’t give much of a feedback that could help me with my writing. Most teachers just gave me a grade and that was the end of it so I never really got advice or tips on how to improve my writing skills.
Coming into this class I felt like I wasn’t at the writing level needed for the class but my reading was and I could learn quickly and improve my writing skills pretty quickly. I thought it would just be normal writing. Once I heard about what kind of writing we would be doing I knew I was going to have trouble with the papers. I felt like I was good with reading but I was wrong. Instead of just reading an article or book like in high school, you have to break it down and analyze the piece of writing. I wasn't really prepared for writing analyses and using rhetoric strategies. I never heard of rhetoric until now. After learning about rhetoric strategies and how to use them, I realized how helpful they could be in your writing and how it really does improve your writing skills. I felt like I could widen my writing with rhetorical strategies and make it a lot better. Learning about logos, pathos, and ethos really helped me with my writing. When I write a persuasive essay or propose a new idea, it helps me write with more depth in my writing and really convinces and catches attention of the reader.
Between my first paper in the class and now I would say I gained much better skills on writing. In my first paper we had to pick a commercial and talk about how it uses strategies to persuade people to buy it. I didn't really analyze the commercial; I did more of a review. After peer reviews and help I learned how to write more of an analysis paper and how to use rhetoric strategies like logos, pathos, and ethos. I had examples of the rhetorical strategies I just didn’t point them out. I felt like it gave me more depth in my writing and meaning. This project helped me learn how to analyze a commercial in more depth. I would’ve never thought of how commercials persuade us to buy them until now. I always look for how commercials try to make us buy their products now when watching television.
With project two, it also helped me go into more depth of analyzing a book. It wasn’t my best essay but it is a great improvement than my essays in high school. I felt like I learned how to interpret a book now and what the author is trying to get across and what his main argument is. From before I would just read the book and re-state what the author said in the book like a summary. I think this is where I made the most improvement in. I learned how to read with a different mindset than in high school. I believe this new mindset of reading could really help me in the future when I write about a book or article.
As the class progressed, I learned a lot of skills and ways to improve my writing. The main thing I learned was how to widen my writing with rhetorical strategies. Leaving the class I feel like my writing level is much better and so is my reading. I’m more of an active reader now and it really helps me with my writing. I still have a lot of things to improve in my writing that I hope to do in the future. The class has well prepared me for my future writings and given me great ways on how to write a paper.
